Homemade Natural Cough Syrup Recipe

We all got hit with some  degree of a sore throat and cough this week, so I whipped up a batch of immune boosting homemade natural cough syrup recipe to get us all through it and here’s the recipe!!!

Homemade Natural Cough Syrup Recipe

You’ll need:

3 oranges (navel medium, preferably organic)

3 limes (preferably organic)

3 lemons (preferably organic)

2 onions (preferably organic)

6-8 cloves of garlic (preferably organic)

1 inch of fresh ginger root peeled or 1tbsp of ground ginger

1 cinnamon stick or 1tbsp of ground cinnamon powder

1 cup (approx 250mls) of honey (preferably organic)

4litres of water

1tbsp of vitamin c powder (ascorbic acid)

1 liqourice stick (optional)

1 tsp of cloves (optional)

1/2 cup of elderberries (optional)

You’ll need to

Prepare all the fresh ingredients by washing and slicing the oranges, limes, lemons, garlic, onions & ginger (if using fresh ginger), keeping the skins on the oranges, limes and lemons (wash skins well).

Bring the water to the boil in a large pot, then add all the ingredients, apart from the the honey and vitamin c powder and stir well.

Bring it back to the boil, then let simmer on a low heat for 30mins, stirring and checking a few times to ensure it doesn’t boil dry (all appliances are different, close to the lowest heat should be fine).

Once finished, you can let it sit for an hour or so longer to let more the nutrients infuse the syrup, or when it’s cool enough, strain the syrup out into a large bowl. Be sure to really press the liquid through the sieve to get as much of it out as possible. You can then throw out or compost the solids left behind.

Now finish off the syrup by stirring in the honey and vitamin C powder thoroughly.

Storage

You can store the syrup in a glass jar in the fridge for about a week.

Dosage

When a cough or cold is here, take 2tbsps every 2hrs while awake with plenty of water.  As a immune boosting protecter if you live with someone with a cough or cold, take 2tbsp a day.

I hope you enjoy making and using this homemade natural cough syrup recipe, especially if you’re looking for an alternative to some of the chemical, sugar laden over the counter brands out there.

We’ve used this for about 2 years with some variations and found it’s really effective in helping the healing process when a cough or cold strikes.
